John Portman's Houses
Atlanta-based architect John Portman, FAIA, died shortly before the beginning of 2018. Considered the father of the atrium hotel, he was the rare architect who was a developer as well, underwriting some of his most daring projects. To find out more about his legacy as a commercial architect, read the New York Times obituary and his firm’s own tribute here. There’s also a film on his work available through Amazon. His own houses were as audacious as his other work, of course. He had homes in both Atlanta and tony Sea Island, Georgia. For a glimpse into those, see the story in Architectural Digest.
